ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE

AAFB was established in 1942 by order of President Roosevelt as an Army airfield. Since the end of World War II, Andrews has served as headquarters for the Continental Air Command, Strategic Air Command, Military Air Transport Service and Air Force Systems Command. Today the 4,220-acre base is home to many individual units of the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, including the 28th Military Airlift Wing. The Airlift Wing provides air transportation for the President, Vice President, cabinet members and other high-ranking US officials, as well as foreign dignitaries. ANTIQUE CHESAPEAKE CAROUSEL & MINIATURE TRAIN

The park features an authentic, hand-carved, hand-painted, 80-year-old carousel. Featured on the Carousel are 45 animals with a rare combination of kangaroo, jackass, goat and seahorse. BALTIMORE & OHIO RAILROAD DEPOT (LAUREL TRAIN STATION)

In 1835, The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad began direct service between Washington and Baltimore. The prospering mill town of Laurel became a major station on the new railroad line. Today, the B & O Railroad Depot (Laurel Train Station) is an area landmark. This restored American Queen Anne style structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to operate as a busy commuter station. Located on 430 acres overlooking the confluence of the Patuxent River and the Western Branch, Billingsley is an early brick plantation home built around 1740. COLLEGE PARK AIRPORT & AVIATION MUSEUM

College Park Airport, established in 1909, is the world's oldest continuously operating airport. It is perhaps only second in importance to Kitty Hawk in the first 25 years of American aviation history. The airport is also home to the College Park Aviation Museum. It displays a number of historic flying machines with period displays and artifacts. The museum includes a 1911 Wright B and a 1918 Curtis Jenny, an animatronic Wilbur Wright and aviation simulators. There is also an aviation theme restaurant adjacent to the museum. The museum is open daily 10-5 p.m. The museum is closed for major holidays. Group tours available by appointment. ($) (D)

DARNALL'S CHANCE HOUSE MUSEUM

Darnall's Chance was built in ca. 1742 by James Wardrop, a wealthy Scottish merchant. It is one of the oldest houses in Upper Marlboro and was drastically remodeled in 1857 in the Italianate style. In 1986, the house was saved from proposed demolition and restored to its original Georgian appearance. The property includes a unique 18th century brick burial vault. Walk-in tours, Sun 12 noon to 4 p.m.; Fri 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other tours and group arrangements by appointment. ($) (D)

Dorsey Chapel is a small frame "meetinghouse" styled church that was the focal point of rural African-American communities in the county during the 1900's. The Chapel was dedicated in September 1900 and was actively used until 1971. Restored in 1994, the Chapel provides a historic glimpse into the past. It has been designated a Prince George's County "historic site" by the Historic Preservation Commission. Walk in tours are Friday 11-3 p.m. and other times by appointment. FORT FOOTE PARK

Fort Foote was constructed during the Civil War to guard the river route to Alexandria, Washington, and Georgetown. Along with Fort Washington it was part of the Capitol's defenses against the Confederate sympathies of the Northern Neck of Virginia and Southern Maryland. The fort's remains, now a local park, contain Rodman Guns and other remnants. Park is open 10 a.m.-dark and is closed most major holidays. ($)

FORT WASHINGTON PARK
This large brick and stone fort, on the Maryland shore of the Potomac River was the only permanent fort ever built to defend the Nation's Capital. The first version of the fort was built in 1809. It was destroyed by the British during the War of 1812, then subsequently rebuilt as an outer defense of the Capital. Open daily 9 to 5 p.m. The fort displays cannons, ramparts, earthworks, and drawbridge. Interpretive history tours are also available. ($) (D)

GREENBELT MUSEUM
Greenbelt is a National Historic Landmark planned community that was designed and built by the Federal Government during the Great Depression. Greenbelt's team of prominent planners and architects attempted to create a small utopia, using principles of garden city planning. The Museum includes an original International Style house near the town's center. It is restored and furnished with furniture designed by the government to fit these homes. The Museum presents interpretive exhibits in the Art Deco-style Community Center at 15 Crescent Road. The house is open Sun, 1 to 5 p.m. and by special appointment. The Community Center Exhibit Gallery is open daily 9 to 9 p.m. ($)

LAUREL MUSEUM
This 1830's mill works' house, operated by the Laurel Historical Society, features exhibits on Laurel history, and houses the collections of photographs, tools, personal artifacts, textiles, and histories depicting religious, social, business and cultural growth of this community, which began as a mill town in the early 19th century. MARIETTA HOUSE MUSEUM

Marietta House was the plantation home of Judge Gab Duvall, a member of the Maryland General Assembly, the Maryland Supreme Court, and comptroller of the US Treasury and associate justice of US Supreme Court. The house is furnished and interpreted to reflect three generations of Duvalls who occupied it between 1815 and 1900. It is also headquarters of the Prince George's County Historical Society and F.S. DeMarr Memorial Library of County History. The site offers programs and is host many living history encampments throughout the year. MEMORIAL PEACE CROSS

The Memorial Peace Cross is an area landmark that has become synonymous with the historic town of Bladensburg. This monument, completed and dedicated in 1925, was erected to honor the men of Prince George's County who were killed in World War I. The first enlisted man from the Prince George's to die in the line of duty (WWI) was George B. Farmer. The cross towers above the convergence of Baltimore Avenue, Bladensburg Road and Annapolis Road.

NASA/GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER

The hub of all NASA tracking activities, Goddard is also responsible for the development of unmanned sounding rockets, and research in space and earth sciences including NASA's Mission to Planet Earth. Through interactive educational exhibits, visitors explore Goddard Space Flight Center with a focus on 1958 to present. Collections include space flight artifacts and photographs. Model rocket launchings, gift shop and special group tours available. The Visitor Center is currently open by appointment only. NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL LIBRARY
Established in 1862 under legislation signed by President Lincoln, the National Agricultural Library, along with the Library of Congress and the National Library of Medicine, is one of the three national libraries of the United States. It is the largest agricultural library in the world with over 2.3 million volumes on 48 miles of shelves located on 14 floors. Open 8-4:30 p.m. (D)

NATIONAL ARCHIVES II
The Archives is best known as the current home of the Richard Nixon/Watergate tapes. NATIONAL COLONIAL FARM
An agricultural-historical museum project of the Accokeek Foundation, the farm provides an appropriate setting of the exhibition and demonstration of agricultural methods, crops and livestock of a modest Tidewater farm of the mid-18th century. The National Register of Historic Places recognizes districts, buildings, structures, objects, and sites for their significance in American history, archeology, architecture, engineering, or culture, and identifies them as worthy of preservation. Established by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Register is a program of the U. S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, and is administered at the State level by the Maryland Historical Trust. Seventy-two Prince George's County sites are currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Listing in the National Register honors the property by recognizing its importance to its community, State, or to the Nation. Each property is listed by name, address, and date of inclusion in the National Register. Properties that have an [NHL] symbol before there names are also designated as a National Historic Landmark. Built in 1929, Oxon Hill Manor is a historic treasure. Architect Jules Henri de Sibour designed this house. The 49-room, two-story Neo Georgian-style brick mansion his exquisite decorative detail, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 55-acre property includes beautiful English gardens overlooking a rose-wrapped reflecting pool, expansive lawns, and a wide-open terrace with unforgettable views of the Potomac River. POPLAR HILL ON HIS LORDSHIP'S KINDNESS
This National Historic Landmark derives its name from a 7,000-acre land grant from Lord Baltimore to a relative. It has been the home of justices of the county and levy courts, a U.S. Senator, and a U.S. ambassador. The property contains historic outbuildings such as a privy, a dairy, slave infirmary, and smoke house. Open Mar-Dec, Fri, 1 to 4 p.m.; 2nd and 4th Sun, 12 noon to 4 p.m. with last tour at 3:30 p.m. Group tours welcome and alternate visiting hours by appointment. ($)

SEABROOK SCHOOLHOUSE

This vintage schoolhouse is one of the few surviving one-room schoolhouses in Prince George's County. It was built in 1896 by the residents of the Seabrook community and provided education for grades one through seven until the early 1950s. The building is unique in that it was built to resemble the Victorian Gothic architectural style of the cottages that were originally built in the community. Maintained by the M-NCPPC, the schoolhouse has been restored and continues its legacy of education. It is open for tours and features a multi-faceted, overall program that includes interpretive exhibits and artifacts, mock classes, and recreational programs. Hours of operation: Open for walk-in tours on first Friday/Sunday of every month. Other times by appointment. Additional tour hours available during summer months. Free for walk-in tours. $1 per person for group tours.

The Oxon Hill Library is built on the site of the Sojourner Truth Elementary School. The Sojourner Truth Room was established in 1967 and named in honor of the great activist for the rights of African Americans and women. It contains a collection of books, periodicals, pamphlets, photographs, and other material on African American historyand culture. It is one of the two largest African-American research collections in Maryland, comparable only to the State Library Resource Center in Baltimore. The library is open to the public. SURRATT HOUSE MUSEUM

The Surratt House was built in 1852 for Surratt family. This middle-class plantation home served as a tavern, post office, and Confederate "safehouse" during the Civil War. In the fall of 1864, the Surratts became involved in a plot to kidnap President Abraham Lincoln. After the plan had changed to murder in April of 1865, the assassin John Wilkes Booth stopped here briefly as he fled Washington. Group tours by appointment.
